Moving is something Charl and I have done fairly regularly in our lives, Charl much more than myself. This is likely why we have settled in to our new home so quickly. Also the reason we are eager to find a place to settle down. Before getting too deep into unpacking the boxes we straight into the garden planting herbs and vegetables we got from a local nursery.
I suppose Charl and I do find a great deal of joy from gardening. We both had fairly chaotic lives before and tend to keep other grounded, growing our own food and focusing on creating a comfortable home certainly helps maintain that sense of peace.
First we began by preparing the area where we wanted to plant as well as put in a sort of food waste tube. This tube is used to promote earthworms within the soil. We throw out any food scraps which are good for earthworms and so far we have have had good success and enjoy the grow in our garden.
A week or so later Charl found these metal beams we could use for our tomato trellis. I was actually working while Charl was busy outside and I was surprised with a rather dashing trellis. I do enjoy being part of a team as we work together to ensure that our ship is running smoothly. It was great fun planting the tomatoes, especially since we had 20 or so volunteer seedlings coming up.
We planted a great deal of herbs like thyme, oregano, basil, pineapple sage, lemon verbena, rosemary, and tarragon. We also have Turk’s Turban squash, gem squash and a few bean varieties busy growing. We have plenty growing in the garden, and for a smaller garden she works very well.
Radishes grow so well and so fast that they can bring a smile to anyone. It was only was we started growing radishes that I finally began to enjoy them in our cooking.
It has no been almost three months since we moved into this lovely stone cottage. Though it is a short time it feels as though we have been here quite some time longer. Every move we have made has gotten us one step closer to our goal. I look forward to the day when we no longer have to think of moving onto the next place and settling into a home.
